I’m re-standing as External Comms Co-ordinator. This below is my official statement. The election will be at conference, rather than a ballot across the membership, as nobody else put in a nomination, but members can stand against me at Conference.

Statement

The Green Party deserves to succeed. People want us to succeed, and there is goodwill towards us in nearly every quarter, even in the media.

Over the last two years, I have secured paid press support, a more professional outlook on communications, including use of demographic data, survey information and external professional support. This year, I was key to bringing in Direct Debit which will raise over £100,000 of additional annual income.

The challenge

We’ve not had a high profile for a long time, and although all of our media personnel are now working at full stretch, we still need to break through into some key media outlets. The essential thing now is to demonstrate success. We can do this through standing more candidates, getting bigger votes, showing we’re prepared to grasp the mantle of political leadership, and by getting more members.

Many of these things we are doing, but it is up to the party to choose success over complacency. We must not believe the rhetoric of some that success will mean abandoning our principles. Putting our principles into practice by being elected and effective is the most principled thing we can do.

Next steps for External Comms

We have employed a second press officer, we are recruiting members, we are looking to change the website. We have surveyed lapsed members to see why they have left. We have analysed our voters and delivered accurate information to local parties to identify their supporters street by street.

The next steps will be for more training, more campaigning, and extending the online video project, more recruitment, and more fund raising.
